The article presents the data on the type and authentic specimens of algal names published by Soviet phycologist A.D. Zinova (1902–1985), both alone and with co-authors. The specimens are conserved in the Algal Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia (LE). The specimens were collected in the Arctic seas, Russian continental and Far Eastern seas and also in Antarctic and Subantarctic regions: in the Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Barents Sea, White Sea, East Siberian Sea, Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, Sea of Japan, Cooperation Sea; near Greenland, Spitsbergen, New Siberian Islands, Kuril Islands, Kerguelen Islands, Macquarie Island (Tasmania). The inventory comprises 74 specimens of 31 taxa validly published by A.D. Zinova and colleagues, including 22 holotypes, 7 isotypes, 7 lectotypes (all designated in this article), 8 isolectotypes, 9 syntypes, 14 paratypes, 3 original specimens and 4 authentic specimens. In addition, 4 specimens of 2 invalidly published taxa are listed.

The article is the second in a series of publications on the type and authentic specimens of algal names conserved in the Algal Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science, St. Petersburg, Russia (LE). The article presents the data on the original and authentic specimens for the names published by Soviet phycologist Anna Dmitrievna Zinova (1902–1985) both alone and with her colleagues, namely S.D. Dimitrova-Konaklieva, I.S. Gussarova, A.A. Kalugina, V.F. Makijenko, L.P. Perestenko, E.B. Zaberzhinskaja. These authors validly published the names of 31 taxa (Zinova, 1948, 1949, 1950a, b, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1959, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1972a, b; Zinova, Perestenko, 1964; Zinova, Zaberzhinskaja, 1968; Zinova, Makijenko, 1972; Zinova, Kalugina, 1974; Zinova, Dimitrova-Konaklieva, 1976). The specimens were collected in the Arctic seas, Russian continental and Far Eastern seas and also in Antarctic and Subantarctic regions: in the Caspian Sea (4), Black Sea (2), Barents Sea (13), White Sea (1), East Siberian Sea (1), Bering Sea (3), Sea of Okhotsk (13), Sea of Japan (13), Cooperation Sea (2); near Greenland (1), Spitsbergen (1), New Siberian Islands (3), Kuril Islands (10), Kerguelen Islands (7), Macquarie Island (4).

The following inventory comprises 74 specimens of 31 taxa validly published by the above-mentioned authors, including 22 holotypes, 7 isotypes, 7 lectotypes, 8 isolectotypes, 9 syntypes, 14 paratypes, 3 original specimens and 4 authentic specimens. In addition, 4 specimens of 2 invalidly published taxa are listed.

Within the groups of higher ranks (Rhodophyta, Phaeophyceae), the taxa are arranged in the alphabetical order of generic names, specific and infraspecific epithets. Each taxon is accompanied by following information (for more details, see the first article of the series: Mikhaylova, Sokolova, 2019):

1. The earliest validly published Latin name (legitimate names in bold italics, illegitimate in italics) with nomenclatural citation.

2. Quotation from the protologue in original script followed by English translation when necessary.

3. The region from which the taxon was described.

4. The category of the specimen: holotype, isotype, lectotype, isolectotype, syntype, paratype, original specimen (Turland et al., 2018: Art. 9); authentic specimen.

Quite often, the specimens at the Algal Herbarium LE are represented by more than one plant mounted on different paper sheets and stored in a common envelope with a common label or labels. In accordance with Art. 8.3 and Ex. 9 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018) we consider the contents of one envelope with a common label as one specimen (exceptions are specially noted). Thus, in the following text we distinguish between the number of specimens and that of sheets indicated in brackets after a type category. The latter refers to the sheets stored in a common envelope and making a single specimen.

5. Standardized text of the specimen label followed by its English translation.

6. The number of barcode in the Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (LE).

RHODOPHYTA

Callithamnion kirillianum Zinova et Zaberzh., 1968, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast., 1968 [5 ] : 29–30.

Protologue: “Турus. URSS, mare Caspicum, Azerbajdzhan, archipelagus Bakinskij, insula Svinoj dicta, in alto 2 m, in conchis, VI 1962, K.M. Petrov, in Inst. bot. Acad. sci. URSS (Leningrad) conservantur… Тип. СССР, Каспийское море, Азербайджан, Бакинский архипелаг, о. Свиной, глубина 2 м, на раковинах, VI 1962, К.М. Петров; хранится в Гербарии низших растений Ботанического института Акад. наук СССР (Ленинград)”. – Described from the Caspian Sea.

Holotype: “Callithamnion kirillianum A. Zin. et Zaberzh. Каспий, Азербайджан, Бакинский арх. о. Свиной, гл. 2 м, на раковинах, № 7752, VI 1962, leg. К.М. Петров [The Caspian, Azerbaijan, Baku Archipelago, Svinoy Island, depth 2 m, on shells, № 7752, VI 1962, leg. K.M. Petrov]”, LE A0000201.

Delesseria belayevii Zinova, 1963, Bot. Mater. Otd. Sporov. Rast. Bot. Inst. Komarova Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R., 16: 53–54, fig. 1 (“Belayevii”).

Protologue: “Habitatio. Insula Kerguelen, ad saxa in zona litorali. P.V. Uschakov et G.M. Belayev, 20 IV [sic!] 1956 legerunt. Турus in herbario Sectionis cryptogamicae Inst. Bot. Ac. Sc. URSS in Leningrad conservatur… Местонах. Кергелен, на камнях литоральной зоны. П.В. Ушаков и Г.М. Беляев, 20 IV [sic!] 1956”. – Described from the Kerguelen Islands.

Holotype (2 sheets): “Delesseria. О. Кергелен, литораль, скалы, камни, с цистокарпами, 20 V 1956, leg. П. Ушаков, Г. Беляев [Kerguelen Island, intertidal zone, rocks, stones, with cystocarps, 20 V 1956, leg. P. Ushakov, G. Belyayev]”; “Delesseria Belayevii n. sp. тип! [type!] 1961. Determ. A. Zinova”, LE A0000202.

Isotype: “Delesseria. О. Кергелен, литораль, скалы и камни, 20 IV 1956, leg. П. Ушаков и Беляев [Kerguelen Island, intertidal zone, rocks and stones, 20 IV 1956, leg. P. Ushakov and Belyayev]”, LE A0000203.

Note. The date “20 IV 1956” in the protologue and on the label of the isotype is incorrect. The First Soviet Antarctic Expedition visited the Kerguelen Islands in May 1956 (Otchet…, 1956; Ushakov, 1958). Thus, the correct date is 20 V 1956.

Delesseria uschakovii Zinova, 1963, Bot. Mater. Otd. Sporov. Rast. Bot. Inst. Komarova Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R., 16: 62–63, fig. 7 (“Uschakovii”); ead. 1958, Inform. Byull. Sovetsk. Antarktich. Eksped. 3: 47, nom. nud.

Protologue: “Habitatio. Insula Macquarie, ad saxa in zona litorali. P.V. Uschakov, 4 IV 1956 legit. Typus in Herbario Sectionis cryptogamicae Inst. Bot. Ac. Sc. URSS in Leningrad conservatur… Местонах. Маккуори, на камнях литорали. П.В. Ушаков, 4 IV 1956”. – Described from Macquarie Island, Tasmania.

Holotype: “Delesseria Uschakovii A. Zin. (sp. nov.). О. Маккуори, литораль, скалы, 4 IV 1956, leg. П.В. Ушаков, det. А. Зинова [Macquarie Island, intertidal zone, rocks, 4 IV 1956, leg. P. Ushakov, det. A. Zinova]”, LE A0000204.

Halosaccion arcticum Zinova, 1953, Bot. Mater. Otd. Sporov. Rast. Bot. Inst. Komarova Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R., 9: 93–95, fig.

Protologue: “Habitatio. Insulae Novosibirienses, Spetsbergia et Groenlandia, zona sublitorali… Местонах. В сублиторальной зоне у Новосибирских островов, Шпицбергена и Гренландии”. – Described from the Arctic seas.

Lectotype (Mikhaylova, designated here): “Halosaccion arcticum n. sp. О. Котельный – Н[ово]-Сибирские о., лагуна Нерпичья, 3 IX 1947, Короткевич”; “Type. Halosaccion arcticum A. Zin. sp. nov. Novo-Sibirian Islands, Kotel’nyj island, Nerpalakh lagoon. Cast ashore, 3 IX 1947, leg. E. Korotkevitch, det. A. Zinova, 1952”, LE A0000205.

Note. The specimen has the above-cited inscription on the sheet with the algae, made by Zinova in Russian, and two typewritten labels, in Russian and in English. When copying and translating the original inscription, the toponym “Nerpich’ya” was changed for “Nerpalakh”. In fact, the Nerpalakh Inlet communicates with the Nerpich’ya Lagoon.

Isolectotype: “Изотип [Isotype]. Halosaccion arcticum A. Zin. Novosibirskije Islands, Kotel’nyj isl., Nerpalakh lagoon. Cast ashore, 3 IX 1947, leg. E.S. Korotkevitch, det. A. Zinova”, LE A0000206.

[New Siberian Islands, Kotelny Island, Nerpalakh lagoon, 3 IX 1947, leg. Korotkevitch]”, LE A0000207.

Note. The word “Nerpich’ya” in the original inscription was then corrected to “Nerpalakh”.

Syntype: “Halosaccion arcticum A. Zin. Шпицберген [Spitsbergen], 1872–[18 ] 73, leg. F.R. Kjellmann, det. А.Д. Зинова [A.D. Zinova], 1952”; “Halosaccion ramentaceum (L.) J. Ag. Insulae Spetsbergenses…”, LE A0000208.

Syntype: “Halosaccion arcticum A. Zin. Гренландия [Greenland], 1837, leg. Hornemann, det. А. Зинова [A.D. Zinova], 1952”; “Scytosiphon ramentaceus Lgb., Halymen[ia] rament[acea] ab oris Grinlandiae, [1 ] 837, Hornemann”, LE A0000209.

Authentic specimen: “Halosaccion arcticum A. Zinova. Вост[очно]-Сибирское м[оре], Медвежьи о-ва, о. Четырехстолбовой, выброс, 1948, leg. З.И. Гайтерова, det. А.Д. Зинова, 1954 [East Siberian Sea, Medvezhyi Islands, Chetyryokhstolbovoy Island, cast ashore, 1948, leg. Z.I. Gayterova, det. A. Zinova, 1954]”, LE A0000210.

Heteroglossum ochotense Zinova, 1972, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast., 9: 67–70, fig. 3 .

Protologue: “Typus. Mare Ochotense, sinus Gizhi-ginskaja guba dictus, Najachan, in rejectis, 3 VIII 1966, E.I. Blinova; in Inst. Bot. Acad. sci. URSS (Leningrad) conservatur… Тип. Охотское море, Гижигинская губа, Наяхан, выброс, 3 VIII 1966, Е.И. Блинова; хранится в Бот. инст. АН СССР в Ленинграде”. – Described from the Sea of Okhotsk.

Holotype: “Тип. Heteroglossum ochotense A. Zin. Зинова, 1972, Нов. сист. низш. раст. 9: 67. Охотское море, Гижигинская губа, Наяхан. Выброс, 3 VIII 1966, leg. Е.И. Блинова, det. А. Зинова”; “Type. Okhotsk sea , Ghižhiginskaya bay, Nayakhan. Cast ashore, 3 VIII 1966, leg. E. Blinova, det. A. Zinova”, LE A0000211.

Note. There are pencil inscriptions “Differo/glossum/ligula”, “Heteroglossum”, “Diversiglossumlingua” on a separate label, giving an interesting evidence of searching for the best genus name by Zinova.

Hildenbrandia canariensis Børgesen var. achthopo-litana Zinova et Dim.-Konakl., 1976, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast., 13: 13 (“Hildenbrandtia”).

Protologue: “Typus. Bulgaria, sinus Achthopolitanus, ad lapides, 0.5 m alt., 16 VII 1974, S.D. Dimitrova-Konaklieva; in Inst. Bot. Acad. sci. USSR (Leningrad) conservatur… Тип. Болгария, Ахтопольский залив, на камнях, на глубине 0.5 м, 16 VII 1974, С.Д. Димитрова-Конаклиева; хранится в Гербарии Бот. инст. АН СССР (Ленинград)”. – Described from the Black Sea.

Holotype: “Тип [Type]. Hildenbrandtia canariensis var. achthopolitana A. Zin. et Dim.-Kon. var. nov. А. Зинова, С.Д. Димитрова-Конаклиева, Нов. сист. низш. раст. 1976, с. 13. …Болгария, Ахтопольский залив, на камнях, глуб. 0.5 м, 16 VII 1974, leg. С. Димитрова-Конаклиева, det. А. Зинова, С. Hypophyllum ruprechtianum Zinova, 1965, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast., 1965 [2 ] : 90–94, fig. 9 .

Protologue: “Typus. Mare Beringianum, insula St. Pauli, in rhizoidibus Laminariae longipedis, 1849, Postels; in Herbario Inst. bot. Acad. sci. URSS (Leningrad) conservatur… Тип. Берингово море, о. Св. Павла, на ризоидах Laminaria longipes, 1849 г., Постельс; хранится в гербарии Ботанического института АН СССР в Ленинграде”, “У берегов о. Беринга (риф Китовой бухты, ванна, 6 IV 1931, Е.Ф. Гурьянова) было собрано 8 небольших, до 7 см выс., оборванных экземпляров Hypophyllum ruprechtianum, росших от стелющегося основания [8 small tattered specimens of Hypophyllum ruprechtianum up to 7 cm high, growing from the creeping base, were collected near Bering Island (reef of Kitovaya Bight, pool, 6 VI 1931, leg. E.F. Guryanova)]”. – Described from the Bering Sea.

Lectotype (Mikhaylova, designated here): “Delesseria crassifolia Rupr., St. Paul, 1849, leg. Postels”, LE A00000213.

Isolectotype: “Delesseria (sinuosa?) crassifolia R. St. Paul, (ejecta?) etiam incarcerata rhizom. Lamin. longipes et parasit. in Plumaria asplenioides, 1849, leg. Postels”, LE A00000214.

Note. The original material from Ruprecht’s herbarium is represented by two envelopes, one containing a specimen and an original, more detailed label by Ruprecht’s hand, and the other one – a specimen with a brief inscription by Zinova’s hand. None of the specimens have the name Hypophyllum ruprechtianum or a “Type” label. As only one of them has the original label, it is reasonable to treat them as parts of a single gathering subsequently separated. The specimen illustrated by Zinova in the protologue is designated here as the lectotype.

Paratype: “Hypophyllum ruprechtianum (sp. n.). О. Беринга, риф Китовой бухты, глубокая каменист[ая] яма между бурыми водоросл[ями], 6 VI 1931, leg. Е. Гурьянова [Bering Island, reef of Kitovaya Bight, deep rocky pit between brown algae, 6 VI 1931, leg. E. Guryanova]”; “Hypophyllum ruprechtianum A. Zin. … leg. Е. Гурьянова, det. А. Зинова [leg. E. Guryanova, det. A. Zinova]”; “вершина по Phycodrys, стволик по Phycodrys, основание! стелющееся, края с выростами! [apex like in Phycodrys, stipe like in Phycodrys, base! creeping, edges with outgrowths!]”; “Notae criticae. Mikamiella ruprechtiana (A. Zin.) Wynne, А. Зинова [A. Zinova], 1978”, LE A0000215.

Note. There are 2 authentic specimens from Saint Paul Island, collected in 1826 by P.F. Kuzmishchev (or passed to him by other person), and determined by Zinova in 1970 as Hypophyllum ruprechtianum (and later in 1970 as Mikamiella ruprechtiana (A. Zin.) Wynne) conserved in the main collection in the folder labelled Delesseria crassifolia.

Phyllophora orientalis Zinova et Makienko, 1972, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast., 9: 61–64, figs 1, 2 .

Protologue: “Typus. Mare Japonicum, sinus Petri Magni, promontorium Rynda, 10 m alt., 25 VIII 1956, S.V. Vassilenko; in Inst. Bot. Acad. sci. URSS (Leningrad) conservatur… Тип. Японское море, зал. Phyllophora orientalis A. Zin. et Mak.: 1 – type specimen…]”. – Described from the Sea of Japan.

Holotype: “Phyllophora orientalis A. Zin. et Makijenko. Японское м., зал. П[етра] В[еликого], ст. 85, гл. 18 м, грунт ил, 1956, С. Василенко [Sea of Japan, Peter the Great Bay, station 85, depth 18 m, silt, 1956, S. Vasilenko]”; “Phyllophora orientalis. оригинал. [заметка ?Макиенко:] Образец, помеченный мною Ф., был сфотографирован как типовой (НСНР 1972: 62, рис. 1.1 ), но этикетаж не согласуется с диагнозом. 1986 [original. [Note, probably by Makienko:] The specimen marked by me Ф. was photographed as the type (NSNR 1972: 62, fig. 1.1 ), but the label does not match the diagnosis]”, LE A0000229.

Note. This and other specimens from the Peter the Great Bay cited below undoubtedly belong to the original material. None of their labels, however, matches the protologue completely. The envelope of the above-cited specimen contains two plants mounted on the same sheet. The photo of the plant mounted on the right is reproduced in the protologue (Zinova, Makijenko, 1972: 62, Fig. 1.1 ) with the caption “type specimen”. We consider this caption as an explicit indication of the type, and therefore cite this specimen as the holotype.

Isotype: “Phyllophora orientalis A. Zin. et Makijenko. Японское м., зал. П[етра] В[еликого], ст. 85, гл. 18 м, грунт ил, 1956, С. Василенко [Sea of Japan, Peter the Great Bay, station 85, depth 18 m, silt, 1956, S. Vasilenko]”, LE A0000230.

Note. The plant is mounted on the same sheet as the holotype with a common label.

Original specimen (3 sheets): “Phyllophora orientalis A. Zin. et Mak. ?Изотип? Японское м. Зал. П[етра] В[еликого], к S от южного мыса бухты Ринда [sic!], ст. 8, драга 8, гл. 13 м, гр.: илистый песок, 25 VIII 1956, leg. Василенко, det. В. Макиенко [?Isotype? Sea of Japan. Note. The envelop contains four sheets with mounted algae, one of them belonging to another taxon.

Original specimen (2 sheets): “Phyllophora orientalis A. Zin. et Mak. ?Изотип? Японское м. З. Polycoryne compacta Zinova, 1963, Bot. Mater. Otd. Sporov. Rast. Bot. Inst. Komarova Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R., 16: 60–62, fig. 6 .

Protologue: “Habitatio. Insula Kerguelen, in frondibus Myriogrammes kerguelensis. P.V. Uschakov et G.M. Belayev, 20 IV [sic!] 1956 legerunt. Typus in Herbario Sectionis cryptogamicae Inst. Bot. Acad. Sc. URSS in Leningrad conservatur… Местонах. Кергелен, встретилась в значительном количестве на стеблях и нервах Myriogramme kerguelensis. П.В. Ушаков и Г.М. Беляев, 20 IV [sic!] 1956”. – Described from the Kerguelen Islands.

Note. The date in the protologue is incorrect. The First Soviet Antarctic Expedition visited the Kerguelen Islands in May 1956 (Otchet…, 1956; Ushakov, 1958).

Holotype: “Polycoryne compacta A. Zin. Тип (паразитич. на Myriogramme kerguelensis Levr.), о. Кергелен (судно “Обь”). Литораль, скалы, камни. Глуб. 0 м, 20 V 1956, leg. П. Ушаков, Беляев, det. Porphyra helenae Zinova, 1948, Botanicheskii zhurnal, 33, 4: 442 (“Helenae”).

Protologue: “Typus in labio Dalnjaja Zelenetzkaja (Murman) lectus est et in herbario sectionis plantarum cryptogamicum Inst. Bot. Acad. Scient. URSS conservatur… Белое море – о. Сосновец! Мурман – Дальние Зеленцы! г. Ярнышная! о. Кильдин!”. – Described from the Barents Sea.

Lectotype (Mikhaylova, designated here): “Porphyra Helenae A. Zin. Голотип. Мурман, губа Дальнезеленецкая, VII 1940, А.Д. Зинова [Holotype. Murman, Dalnezelenetskaya Inlet, VII 1940, A.D. Zinova]”; “[Note by K.L. Vinogradova:] Porphyra helenae A. Zin. Typus. Murman. Sinus Dalnjaja Zelenezkaja [sic!]. Zona litoralis, VII 1940, A. Zinova”, LE A0000235.

Note. This specimen was cited by K.L. Vinogradova (2007: 535) as “typus”. In the protologue, however, only the type locality is indicated: “in labio Dalnjaja Zelenetzkaja”. The word “Голотип [Holotype]” on the label was added later, and not by A.D. Zinova. Therefore, the two specimens collected in the Dalnezelenetskaya Inlet and stored at LE are syntypes. The citation of “typus” by Vinogradova did not constitute the designation of lectotype, because it did not contain the words “lectotype” and “designated here”, and the collection where the type is conserved was not specified (Turland et al., 2018: Arts. 7.11, 9.22, and 9.23). Here we designate this specimen as the lectotype of Porphyra helenae.

Syntype: “Porphyra helenae A. Zin. Баренцево море, губа Дальнезеленецкая, глубина 6 м, среди зарослей Desmarestia и Lam. saccharina, 12 VIII 1946, leg. В. Кузнецов, det. А. Зинова [Barents Sea, Dalnezelenetskaya Inlet, depth 6 m, between thickets of Desmarestia and Lam. saccharina, 12 VIII 1946, leg. V. Kuznetsov, det. A. Zinova]”; “Porphyra helenae Zin. опр. А. Зинова [det. A. Zinova]”, LE A0000236.

Note. In the envelope, there is also a sheet with schematic drawings of anatomic features.

Paratype: “Porphyra helenae A. Zin. Тип. Баренцево море, пос. Дальние Зеленцы, губа Ярнышная, восточный берег у Красной скалы, ванны в  литоральной зоне, оригинал!, 27 VII 1940, А.Д.  Зинова [Type. Note. In addition, there are 15 paratypes stored in the main collection: 9 envelopes in the folder with Porphyra helenae, and 6 envelopes in the folder with Porphyra amplissima.

Ptilota phacelocarpoides Zinova, 1972b, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast., 9: 85–87, fig. 4 .

Sachalinella trinagulata Zinova, 1972, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast., 9: 65–67, figs 1, 2 .

Protologue: “Typus. Insula Sachalin, sinus Terpenija dictus, Kotikovo, 20 m alt., 18 [sic!] VIII 1955, N.M. Vischnevskaja; in Inst. Bot. Acad. sci. URSS (Leningrad) conservatur… Тип. Сахалин, зал. Скарлато [The second specimen was collected in Aniva Bay by O.A. Scarlato in 1947]”. – Described from the Sea of Okhotsk.

Note. There are discrepancies between the protologue and the labels of the lectotype and isolectotype : the dates disagree (most probably as a result of misprint in the protologue), and only one collector is named in the protologue.

Lectotype (Mikhaylova, designated here): “Sachalinella trinagulata A. Zin. Сахалин, Котиково. Ст. 113. Глуб. 20 м, 10 VIII 1955, leg. В. Возжинская, Н. Селицкая [Вишневская], det. А. Note. The type material is represented by 2 sheets with mounted algae in a common envelope with 3 common labels. The inscription “Type!”, however, is made only on the sheet with a specimen with cystocarps, so we consider it as the holotype. The schematic images of both specimens are published in the protologue: Fig. 9 , А – the specimen with cystocarps (LE A0000247), Fig. 9 , Б – the specimen with tetraspores (LE A0000248) (Zinova, 1963: 65).

Note. The discrepancy of the year cited in the protologue and on the label is most probably a result of  miscopying in the label. T.F. Shchapova worked in  the De-Kastri Bay of the Sea of Japan in 1948 (Mokyevsky, 1957: 16).

Note. The genus name Kallymeniopsis Perest. was published by Perestenko (1975: 1679) with a Latin description, but without type indication as required by Art. 40.1 of the ICN (Turland et al., 2018), so it was not validly published. Later, Perestenko attempted to validate the genus name by indicating K. lacera (Postels et Rupr.) Perest. as its type (Perestenko, 1977: 398); she did not, however, provide it with a full and direct reference to the validating description (Turland et al., 2018: Art. 33.1, 41.5 Note 1), so the validation was not achieved. Since the genus name was not validated at the time of publication of the species name K. verrucosa (Zinova, Gussarova, 1977), the latter was not validly published either (Turland et al., 2018: Art. 35.1). The genus name was indeliberately validated later (Norris, 2014: 344).

Okamurina rigida Zinova, 1976, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast., 13: 9, nom. inval. (Turland et al., 2018: Art. 44.1) (Okamurina Zinova, 1972, nom. illeg. superfl. ≡ Congregatocarpus Mikami, 1971).

Итуруп [the type is the specimen with tetraspores from Iturup Island]”.

Specimen: “Тип [Type]. Okamurina rigida A. Zin. gen. et sp. nov. А. Зинова, Нов. сист. низш. раст. 1976: 9 [A. Zinova, Novosti Sist. Nizsh. Rast. 1976: 9]. (= O. pacifica (Yam.) A. Zin., ibid. 1972a: 70). Курильские о-ва, о. Итуруп, разрез 29, ст. 152. Глуб. 20 м, 28 VIII 1968, leg. В. Павлова, det. А. Зинова [Kuril Islands, Iturup Island, sect. 29, st. 152. 20 m deep. 28 VIII 1968, leg. V. Pavlova, det. A. Zinova]”; “Okamurina pacifica (Yam.) A. Zin., 1972, 7″, с тетраспорангиями [with tetrasporangia]…”; “Notae criticae. Okamurina rigida A. Zin. (gen. et sp. nov.) A. Zinova, 1976”, LE A0000278.

Note. When publishing Okamurina rigida, Zinova (1976) considered it “nomen novum” for her O. pacifica (Zinova, 1972a). In fact, however, O. rigida should have been published as the name of a new taxon, and therefore accompanied by a Latin description or diagnosis or a reference to a previously published Latin description or diagnosis (Turland et al., 2018: Arts. 38.1, 44.1). Since the work referred to by Zinova (1976) contains no Latin description or diagnosis of the species (Zinova, 1972a), the name O. rigida was invalidly published.

In addition, the genus name Okamurina Zinova (1972a) is superfluous and therefore illegitimate (Turland et al., 2018: Art. 52), since the name Congregatocarpus Mikami with the same type Congregatocarpus pacificus (Yamada) Mikami ≡ Pseudophycodrys pacifica Yamada ≡ Okamurina pacifica (Yamada) Zinova was published a year earlier (Mikami, 1971).
